Statement as issued Tuesday:
Fort Wayne, Ind. Heeding calls for a "strong conservative" to challenge Rep. Bob Morris in the general election, Fort Wayne attorney Michael Barranda on Tuesday May 1 announced the formation of an exploratory committee to consider an Independent run at the 84th House District seat.
Barranda, a registered Republican and elected Republican precinct official, announced his intention to "engage residents of Indiana's 84th House District in a discussion about credibility in public service."
Said Barranda, "Ronald Reagan once called Democracy the most deeply honorable government ever devised by man. Over the past year the honor of Democracy has been challenged in Indiana – if not outright mocked in the 84th House District." The exploratory committee, "Friends of Barranda," will provide a platform for effective, transparent and sincere community engagement, while encouraging a healthy dialogue on important issues facing the community.
The committee will explore the candidacy of Michael Barranda; a Fort Wayne attorney, past President of the Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana, Director on the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce Board, and lifetime Republican. He will explore running in the 2014 Republican primary, a race that is unchallenged for 2012, while also exploring whether Fort Wayne constituents deserve a conservative alternative in the 2012 election – an Independent candidate that would caucus with and seek reelection as a Republican.
"As a Republican, community advocate and a concerned citizen of Fort Wayne, I simply cannot stand on the sidelines," said Michael. "I am a proud father of a Girl Scout – but this is not just about that. As a pro-life, Catholic conservative I personally understand the passion with which we should protect the sanctity of life. However, we must also demand that leadership not lose perspective at the expense of the good people of the community. Reason must prevail. Always."
With the creation of Friends of Barranda the conversation for accountability begins now. Friends of Barranda will raise the level of discourse in Fort Wayne – and the 84th District – and immediately focus on the issues most important to the constituents.
