Hatch speaks

Some illumination, finally, from Austin Hatch, on an incredible saga that defies easy categorization.

Life rarely gets more capricious, or more utterly random, than it has been for Hatch, who's survived two plane crashes in his young life, but who lost the rest of his nuclear family in the process. The crash that killed his father and stepmother in Michigan last summer left him with severe brain trauma, something he admits in this piece he's still recovering from.

The good news: Apparently the doctors are amazed at how well he has recovered. And he vows that, come 2013, he'll be playing basketball at the University of Michigan, as planned.

If so, it will be the culmination of one of the more remarkable, and at the same time tragic, stories I've ever encountered in 35 years in this business.

And so: Good on you, young man.
