West Michigan scored five runs in the fourth inning to help get past the TinCaps 8-4 on Wednesday at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich.
The outburst helped the Whitcaps (13-13) build a 6-1 lead. It was 8-1 when the TinCaps (10-16) cut the lead in half with three runs in the seventh.
The loss was the first of a three-game series against Whitecaps and a seven-game road trip for the TinCaps.
Frank Garces (1-2) took the loss after giving up seven hits and six runs (three earned) in four innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Casey McElroy led the TinCaps with a double and a triple. He also had an RBI. Kyung-Min Na had two RBI for Fort Wayne.
Jace Peterson, Duanel Jones, Matthew Colantonio and Clark Murphy each added a hit.
West Michigan’s Wilsen Palacious (1-2) picked up the first win, going six innings and giving up six hits and four earned runs. He didn’t strike out a batter and walked one.
Patrick Leyland knocked in three runs and had two hits for West Michigan, which outhit Fort Wayne 10-7.
The TinCaps were 3 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on base, while the Whitecaps were 7 for 14 with eight runners left on.
