Woodlan-Leo softball: A friendly rivalry

The Woodlan and Leo softball teams have practically grown up playing against one another, during the high school season and in summer ball.

"I have been playing against those (Woodlan) girls since I was about 9 years old, and it has been competitive but at the end of the day it was a great game for both teams," Leo junior pitcher Jessica Claxton said after the Lions' 4-1 win over the Warriors on Thursday. "You can't take away from either team."

Claxton and Woodlan junior Hannah Robbins have faced off the last three years, with Robbins' Warriors winning 1-0 two years ago and 11-4 last year.

"(We) hate losing to this rival, and they hate losing to us," Woodlan coach Barry Ehle said. "We know a lot of their players, and once we get away from the ballpark they will still be talking and will still be friends."

Robbins gave up two runs in the first, while Claxton gave up one. Leo tacked on two more runs in the sixth.

"Both pitchers were probably a little nervous in the first inning because it was a big game and playing the wind and getting used to that," Leo coach Ben Shappell said. "Both teams settled in and until that sixth inning, neither team got anybody moving around the bases (again)."
