4 children strapped to car's hood, police say

Four children ages 4, 5, 6 and 7 were strapped to the hood of a car stopped by a U.S. marshal in Fort Wayne on Monday, and the driver was charged with operating while intoxicated, city police said.

Police said in a statement they responded to the Belmont Beverage at 2116 Fairfield Ave. about 5:30 p.m. on a report of child neglect.

A caller to 911 had reported seeing a man and a woman strap four children to the hood of a car and leave the store's lot, the statement said.

The marshal stopped the car in the 400 block of Poplar Street, it said.

The driver, who was not identified, was charged with operating while intoxicated, the statement said. It said the woman was taken to police headquarters for questioning.

The matter remains under investigation by city police, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office and the Department of Child Services, the statement said.
