Get mom gardening gear for Mother’s Day

If your mother is a gardener, here are some last-minute gift suggestions:

•Garden gloves are an inexpensive option. Pick up a pair or two in her favorite colors.

•A sturdy garden kneeler with ample padding is in the $25-$60 range, but serious gardeners will thank you at the end of each long day in the trenches.

•You can buy a ready-made hanging basket for instant gratification or assemble one with love that will take a little time to fill in.

•Buy a steppingstone kit and personalize it today with hand prints, stones from vacations and other items that will make Mom smile.

•Make up gift certificates to do things that you know she wants. An hour of mowing. An hour of weeding. Painting the post on the mailbox. One glass of her favorite post-gardening beverage.

•A birdbath or statue to make a focal point in a garden bed. Does she like to display chickens, cats or angels inside the house? That collection can extend to the garden.

•A bird feeder and a bag of seeds

•A flat of impatiens, a big geranium, a planter or two to sit next to the front steps.

•A basket of bright-handled tools or one quality tool with a big bow

•Seeds, soil, unusual pots

These are just a few ideas to get your creative juices going.

We aren’t likely to get many more frosts – cross your fingers – and most tender annuals will be just fine from here on out. So go get some. Now.

Time to start snapping

The Journal Gazette’s gardening blog, “We’re Digging It,” (www.journalgazette.net/section/blogs21) will again feature garden photos from local gardeners this growing season.

We kick it off today with a few photos from Robert Kelly of Fort Wayne.

Please send your favorite photo or two to garden@jg.net. Please use the JPEG format and attach it to the email. Please put “In your garden” in the subject line. I need your name and what community you call home. If you would like to add a description of your garden or say why you love to garden feel free to send it in.

If there is any person or pet in the photo, please include the name.

Anne Gregory is a garden putterer, not a gardening expert, and The Journal Gazette Web writer and editor. Share your garden photos (JPEGs, please) and gardening tips. They may be sent to agregory@jg.net. Put ”Garden” in the subject line. Items may also be sent to Gregory at 600 W. Main St., Fort Wayne, IN 46802.
