If your mother is a gardener, here are some last-minute gift suggestions:

•Garden gloves are an inexpensive option. Pick up a pair or two in her favorite colors.

•A sturdy garden kneeler with ample padding is in the $25-$60 range, but serious gardeners will thank you at the end of each long day in the trenches.

•You can buy a ready-made hanging basket for instant gratification or assemble one with love that will take a little time to fill in.

•Buy a steppingstone kit and personalize it today with hand prints, stones from vacations and other items that will make Mom smile.

•Make up gift certificates to do things that you know she wants. An hour of mowing. An hour of weeding. Painting the post on the mailbox. One glass of her favorite post-gardening beverage.

•A birdbath or statue to make a focal point in a garden bed. Does she like to display chickens, cats or angels inside the house? That collection can extend to the garden.

•A bird feeder and a bag of seeds

•A flat of impatiens, a big geranium, a planter or two to sit next to the front steps.

•A basket of bright-handled tools or one quality tool with a big bow

•Seeds, soil, unusual pots

These are just a few ideas to get your creative juices going.

We aren’t likely to get many more frosts – cross your fingers – and most tender annuals will be just fine from here on out. So go get some. Now.
