A new restaurant is set to open Monday in Bluffton.
Sassafras on Main (218 S. Main St., 260-824-8112) is located in the former Rittenhouse restaurant, and though its grand opening isn't for a few days, the new owners have been operating it for weeks.
“We purchased the property three weeks ago yesterday,” says Sue Kristek, who owns Sassafras with husband, Chuck. “There were several things that were still booked by the prior owner that were taking place, so we've been doing those.”
In addition to hosting those types of events – from the South Adams High School prom, to wedding rehearsal dinners, to retirement parties and luncheons – Sassafras will be open for lunch and dinner, specializing in what Kristek calls “American comfort food.” Her husband is a classically trained chef who has worked at The Drake in Chicago, and he's taken those experiences to create the menu, which will feature made-from-scratch soups, chicken, fish, steak and pasta dishes and baked goods, including Kristek's mother's paper bag apple pie recipe.
The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. Kristek hopes to soon be open on Sundays for brunch. Saturday hours will kick in once the previous events booked at the Rittenhouse end, around Labor Day.
