Verbatim: Indiana State Police investigating police-action shooting

From a report received Friday morning from the Indiana State Police:

Fort Wayne, IN-Detectives from the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division from the Fort Wayne Post are investigating an early morning shooting, involving a trooper that occurred just outside of downtown Fort Wayne and resulted in the death of a 33 year old man.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a four-and-a half year veteran of the Indiana State Police was traveling west on Main Street when at the intersection of Cherry Street, he observed an altercation between multiple people. As he was turning around to investigate, one of those involved began to leave the area on foot in a hurried manner.

The trooper gave verbal commands which were not followed and as he caught up to this person, a physical altercation between them ensued. The result was the trooper discharging his duty weapon, striking the suspect an unknown number of times. The suspect was taken to a local hospital and has since been pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld at this time.

The trooper suffered scrapes, cuts and some bruising as a result of the altercation and will be placed on administrative leave as is the policy of the Indiana State Police. This investigation is still ongoing and is being assisted by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Coroner's Office.
