The TinCaps lost the finale of a three-game series with first place Lansing 9-3 Friday at Cooley Law School Stadium. TinCaps starter Frank Garces gave up five runs in a season-low 2.2 innings.
Lansing (29-12) fell behind 2-0 but put together two four-run innings, and were aided by a bevy of mistakes by the TinCaps. Fort Wayne pitching hit three batters, walked home a run with the bases loaded and committed three errors in the loss.
The two TinCaps runs in the third scored within the first three batters of the inning. Mike Gallic led off with a triple to center and Lee Orr followed with a triple of his own to score Gallic. Austin Hedges then grounded out, scoring Orr to score and making the score 2-0 in favor of Fort Wayne (19-23).
The Lugnuts scored a run in the second to pull within 2-1 as Garces (1-3) walked the bases full and then walked in a run. In the third, Lansing sent eight men to the plate and scored four runs, getting the help of a Duanel Jones error in the process.
Trailing 5-2 in the fourth, the TinCaps gt a solo home run by Austin Hedges, which made it 5-3. Hedges tied Casey McElroy for the team lead with four homers.
Four more Lansing runs scored in the seventh to make it 9-3 as the TinCaps hit three men in the frame and committed two errors.
Lugnuts reliever Eric Brown (1-0) picked up the win, tossing three innings in relief of starter David Rollins.
