It's not spring in Fort Wayne until The Deck opens.
Finally, let's celebrate the season -- the outdoor eatery, located behind The Gas House (305 E. Superior St.), opened Monday afternoon.
Not much has changed physically about the restaurant, says Ben Hall, Gas House general manager, but the menu does include some new treats.
One is based on a favorite sandwich of Hall's. The Gas House does a brisket special on Thursdays, and Hall says he's always loved to take scraps of the leftover brisket and build himself a sandwich with cabbage, ginger and horseradish. The Deck now offers a the 18-Hour Brisket Sandwich, which includes cabbage, ginger, green onion, soy sauce and horseradish, giving it a little bit of an Asian element.
Customers can also order tacos with their choice of meat – tilapia, brisket or chicken – or a fried chicken sandwich, which is a shout-out to an Oakland, Calif., restaurant, Bakesale Betty. In addition to being a bake shop, Hall says, the restaurant has fried chicken sandwiches and salads with a bit of a cult following.
