Click It or Ticket targets holiday weekend

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statement as issued Wednesday about the regional effort:

WHAT: Motorists and their passengers traveling throughout the Midwest this Memorial Day weekend are being urged to buckle their seat belts every time they get in a vehicle. It’s a move that can save lives as well as prevent holiday travelers from getting a ticket during the stepped-up enforcement of the latest Click It or Ticket seat belt mobilization.

During the Click It or Ticket mobilization nearly 2,600 law enforcement agencies in the Midwest will be joining police departments throughout the nation in an effort that features extensive nighttime safety belt enforcement, a time when fatalities of unbuckled motorists spike.

In 2010, 61 percent of the 10,647 passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in motor vehicle crashes overnight were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the fatal crash, compared to 42 percent during daytime hours.

WHEN: May 24th through June 3rd, 2012
