The TinCaps took advantage of South Bend's pitching and fielding miscues in the fourth inning and the bullpen locked down the Silver Hawks' bats to take a 7-5 victory Tuesday in South Bend's Coveleski Stadium.
The TinCaps (22-24) built on a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning thanks to three wild pitches by Silver Hawks starter Taylor Siemens (2-1) and a South Bend error that helped bring in four runs for a 6-1 lead.
South Bend (24-22) responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth as TinCaps starter Cody Hebner faced nine batters and was knocked out of the game with a 6-5 lead.
Fort Wayne relievers Ruben Mejia, Robert Eisenbach and Daniel Cropper combined for five scoreless innings to seal the win. Mejia (1-1) picked up the win, and Cropper picked up his fourth save in five tries.
Lee Orr hit his third home run in nine games for the TinCaps in the second inning, and by Donavan Tate extended his hitting streak to seven consecutive games, going 2 for 5 with two RBI. Jace Petrson led Fort Wayne with three hits and two RBI.
