City Councilman Mitch Harper, R-4th, on Wednesday tweeted a local news story quoting him regarding a new $6.9 million volleyball complex being built near Lima Road and Fernhill Avenue.
“Sports tourism is an important part of economic development here. I think our geographic ability to offer these things in close proximity is a very good thing,” the story quoted Harper as saying.
While it is not odd for politicians to promote themselves, they usually do so for things they support. Harper was the only member of the council to vote against the volleyball complex’s request for a tax abatement on Tuesday – the council’s lone vote on the project.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Harper had not responded to a tweet asking about his support for the project he opposed getting tax breaks.
Councilman John Shoaff, D-at-large, also voted against the abatement during the council’s committee session, but signed the final bill in support.
