TinCaps jump on South Bend early, win 14-8

The TinCaps doubled their Wednesday output of seven runs with a 14-8 victory over South Bend at Coveleski Stadium on Thursday.

Fort Wayne (23-24) erupted for five runs in the first inning and added three more in the second and wasn’t threatened the rest of the way.

Austin Hedges belted a two-out grand slam home run in the first, then the TinCaps turned two hits, two walks, two steals, a South Bend error and a wild pitch into three runs in the second inning.

Lee Orr, who added a two-run homer in the sixth inning, finished with three RBI for the TinCaps, who hammered four South Bend pitchers for 13 hits and collected nine walks.

The TinCaps will face the Silver Hawks (24-23) at 7:35 p.m. Friday before returning home for a 7:05 p.m. game Saturday against Bowling Green.
