Purdue to play host for baseball regional

Purdue was selected as one of 16 host programs for the NCAA baseball tournament today.

The Boilermakers’ regional-round games will be played at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary because of stadium construction. The four-team regionals begin Friday.

Purdue, which won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles, will likely be the No. 1 seed in the Gary Regional when the NCAA announces the 64-team field at noon today.

Florida State, ranked No. 1 at times this season, was among five Atlantic Coast Conference schools selected as host sites for the tournament. The others are Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia. The ACC also had a tournament-high five hosts last year.

The Pac-12 is second with four schools – Arizona, Oregon, Stanford and UCLA. The Southeastern Conference has three, with Florida, LSU and two-time defending College World Series champion South Carolina.

Also selected as hosts were: Baylor, Rice and Texas A&M.
