Carroll baseball loses in regionals

LAFAYETTE - Carroll’s magical, magnificent run that gave it back-to-back Class 4A state championships and a third consecutive sectional title ended with a resounding bang Saturday, as the Chargers lost to Zionsville 11-2 in the semifinals of the Lafayette regional at Loeb Stadium.

It was the first tournament loss for the Chargers (23-8) since the 2008-09 season, and it ended a string of 16 straight tournament victories.

From the outset, Carroll was playing catch-up and never did. Zionsville scored a run in the first inning when, with two outs, the Eagles’ Troy Kuhn was hit by a pitch from starting pitcher Blake Converset. Zionsville’s next batter, Parker Dunshee, then hit a flair into shallow right-center field that Carroll second baseman Ross Koble appeared to have caught. But as he fell to the ground, the ball popped out and Zionsville had a 1-0 lead.

From there, it added three runs in the second, two in the third and another three in the fourth to put the game away.
