LAFAYETTE - South Side advanced to the championship game of the Class 4A baseball regional with a 5-1 victory over McCutcheon on Saturday at Loeb Stadium.
The Archers will play the winner of the second semifinal game between two-time defending state champion Carroll and Zionsville at 8 p.m. tonight.
Senior pitcher Will Coursen-Carr held McCutcheon to three hits, but had to struggle out of the seventh inning.
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard with back-to-back doubles. Coursen-Carr walked the next two hitters to load the bases, and got out of the jam with a final-out fly ball to right field.
"I was getting tired," said Coursen-Carr, who threw 118 pitches.
Evan VanSumeren came through with a bases-loaded single to left in the second inning to put the Archers on top 2-0. South added two more in the fifth on an RBI single from Justin Kiessling and a bases-loaded walk to Dallas Conley. South's final run in the fifth came when VanSumeren tripled and scored on Donovan Clark's chop ground ball to second base.
