Kelly is recovering from back surgery

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly underwent back surgery Thursday, the university announced.

Kelly was suffering from a herniated disc in his lower back and is resting comfortably, the news release said.

Kelly is expected to return home this weekend and is scheduled to make a complete recovery in time for when the Irish begin training camp Aug.4.

The Journal Gazette's Assistant Sports Editor Tony Krausz covers The University of Notre Dame.
