WBOI feature wins national journalism award

Statement as issued Tuesday by WBOI:

One of the nation’s top news organizations has recognized Fort Wayne public radio station WBOI for the quality of its reporting. The Radio and Television Digital News Association has bestowed its 2012 Edward R. Murrow award for radio feature reporting on WBOI’s news department, among stations across the country in similarly sized markets.

The award is for a story about the Fort Wayne Derby Brats, an all-girl roller derby team for kids ages 9-17, written by WBOI news director Sean Bueter. "When I received the call from RTDNA that we'd won the national Murrow award, I just about fell off my chair,” Bueter said. “This competition is judged by some of the sharpest broadcasters in the country, and for them to shine a light on our work at WBOI is truly an honor.

Earlier WBOI had been recognized by RTDNA at the regional level for the Derby Brats report, not only in the feature reporting category, but also for sports reporting. That recognition pitted WBOI against stations – both public and commercial -- in similar markets across Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana.

The station also won a regional Murrow award for a story about safety at the Fort Wayne International Airport in the decade since the terrorist attacks of September 11th.

“I’m incredibly proud of our news department,” said WBOI General Manager Will Murphy. “In the past year we’ve joined the StateImpact project, which features two reporters dedicated solely to stories about education issues in Indiana. And we’ve added reporter Chad Bouchard in Washington, D.C., to cover the state’s congressional delegation. The awards from RTDNA are one more indication that we’re headed in the right direction.”

WBOI (89.1 FM) is an NPR member station with a talk and jazz format, operated by Northeast Indiana Public Radio. Its sister station, WBNI (94.1 FM) is a 24-hour classical music station. Together they serve 16 counties in northeast Indiana, northwest Ohio, and southern Michigan. Listeners can find out more about the broadcast schedule, or stream the programming live, by visiting
