Pedestrian struck as driver pours coffee, police say

An Ashley woman was struck by a vehicle early Tuesday while its driver was pouring a cup of coffee, Steuben County Sheriff Tim Troyer said in a statement.

It said Becky Young, 32, was walking along Grapevine Road toward County Road 700 South, northeast of Ashley, when she was struck by a vehicle being driven by a 36-year-old Pleasant Lake man.

Young was flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne with leg and head injuries, the statement said. As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, she was listed in critical condition at the hospital.

The sheriff's statement said the driver told police he was pouring a cup of coffee from a container as he was driving down the road when his vehicle struck the woman.

A Samaritan helicopter, Steuben County EMS, Steuben Township Fire Department, Hudson Fire Department and Steuben County Communications assisted the sheriff's department.
