It was a tough day for northeast Indiana golfers in the final round of the state finals Wednesday. Two area teams and two individuals didn’t fare so well and almost all saw scores rise at The Legends in Franklin.

Warsaw finished tied for sixth with a 625. The Tigers followed Tuesday’s 307 with a 318 on the final day. The Tigers were led by Jon Schram’s 147 total, after shooting a 74 on the second day to go with a 73, and he finished tied for eighth.

Defending state medalist Tyler Ostrom was tied for 14th after a second-round 80 put his total at 152. Ostrom’s first-day 72 was just three strokes away from the lead.

Also for Warsaw, Tim Ahlersmeyer had a 162, Bennett Hollar 164 and Jonny Hollar and Jared Essig shared a 172.

“For both days, all the guys we were playing had big numbers,” Warsaw coach Ben Barkey said in a phone interview. “It is hard to get stuff going when you are taking a double or a triple. I would imagine it was the second day of state that probably had more to do with it than the course for everybody, not just Warsaw.

“You saw a lot of scores were higher than average.”

Bishop Dwenger remained in 10th after a 639 two-day total. The Saints had a 326 after a first-round score of 313.

Final scores for the Saints were Spencer Gillig (156), Drake Eifert (159), John Hope (161), Carter Eifert (164) and Jake Leonard (166).

Individually, East Noble’s Michael Sharp entered the final round in second place one stroke off the individual leader with a 2-under 70, but shot a final round 87 to finish tied for 28th at 157.

“I really couldn’t do anything well,” Sharp said. “(The golf course) might have been playing tougher today, but I don’t think it was, overall, that much more difficult.”

Bellmont’s Chase Ellsworth had a 155 (75-80) and finished tied for 22nd. Evansville Harrison won the team title with a 611, while Sean Stone led the way with a state medalist 140 total.
