Anyone who buys used has a story about That Thing – that one item they found on such a great sale that they just have to tell everyone. Maybe it was the $8 Michael Kors pencil skirt that retailed for $120, or the $12 Coach purse that retails for $298.

Kathy Wedler, store manager at the Goodwill in Covington Plaza, shared some of the store’s best-selling items. So the next time you need baby onesies or a new book for the beach, you can save a few – or many – bucks.

Clothing

Wedler calls clothing the store’s biggest seller, in part because shoppers can find designer items they wouldn’t normally buy because of their exorbitant prices. Men’s Ralph Lauren shirts, for example, usually sell for $4 at Goodwill. A short-sleeve Ralph Lauren polo, meanwhile, would retail for about $85. A Tommy Hilfiger shirt that is $4 at Goodwill might retail for somewhere between $65 and $98.

Savings: 93 percent to 95 percent

Purses

Wedler’s Goodwill does get in real designer purses – and, of course, a few knockoffs – and while some of the designer brands might be a little marked up, they’ll still be better than, say, a $228 Juicy Couture bag.

Savings: A Coach bag on ShopGoodwill.com, Goodwill’s online auction site, had a bid of $55. If it retails for $328, that equates an 83 percent savings.

Shoes

Again, Wedler says, her Goodwill gets in a lot of designer shoes and, often, they’re in excellent condition. She remembers a pair of Donald J Pliner shoes that were never worn. A pair of Pliner sandals, which retail for about $225, came in as part of a huge donation that also included Cole Haan shoes. A flat Cole Haan sandal can retail for as low as $128.

Savings: A pair of Louis Vuitton Fringe Cuff Shoes had a bid of $301 on ShopGoodwill.com. A similar pair of leather shoes on LouisVuitton.com retail for $1,410, for a 78 percent savings.

Baby supplies

Her Goodwill gets in a lot of infant clothing – up to 24 months – and items run 95 cents. The store does get in baby furniture, car seats and the like, but so many recalls have been issued that many of the items they get in can’t be resold, Wedler says.

Savings: A long-sleeve, two-pack onesie at Kohl’s retails for $15, for a 94 percent savings.

Books

Books sell well, Wedler says, and many of the titles the store carries are current. Hardbacks run $1, where a new Stephen King title might have a list price of $35.

Savings: 97 percent

Knickknacks

Goodwill gets a lot of household items in. The older, retro items especially sell well. Wedler recalls a picture of an owl that has been in the store 10 times, and it always sells.
