TinCaps start 2nd half with victory

The TinCaps opened the second half of the Midwest League season with a 4-3 victory over Lake County on Friday at Parkview Field.

The win ended a five-game losing streak for the TinCaps, who finished the first half in seventh place in the Eastern Division with a 31-39 record.

Back-to-back doubles by Jace Peterson and Donavan Tate enabled the TinCaps take a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

The TinCaps added two more runs in the third, then rode the pitching of relief pitchers Ruben Mejia and Johnny Barbato, who split the final four innings.

Barbato was one out from shutting down the Captains, only to have Luigi Rodriguez hammer a two-run home run into the right field seats to cut the lead to 4-3.

Barbato closed out the game when he coaxed Jordan Smith into flying out to right.
