FORT WAYNE, Indiana (June 26, 2012) --- Duck Race officials have announced the top five winners in the Weigand Construction Duck Race to Benefit SCAN, held on Saturday on the St. Joe River in Johnny Appleseed Park. More than 18,000 plastic ducks raced to the finish line with a little help from generator-operated fans, thanks to R.E. Crosby Inc. and Son and Weigand construction companies. The extra equipment was needed because, unlike in the previous 23 years of the duck race, the dam could not be opened due to the city’s efforts at this time to conserve water.

A ducky named “Lynn” crossed the finish line first. Sponsor was Tod Kitchen, of Lima, Ohio, who is winner of $5,000 cash, donated by Weigand. Second-place winner was Cindy Ruchgy of Portland, who won $1,000 cash, donated by Mark Noneman No.1 Advantage Realtors.

Sponsor of both the third- and fifth-place ducks was Bud Hobbs of Fort Wayne. Bob Hatfield, also of Fort Wayne, had the 4th fastest duck. Hobbs won 4 hours of DJ services by CjDj’s, free rental of SCAN’s Children’s Garden on the IPFW campus and a one-year membership to American Health and Fitness. Hatfield won a 1-year membership to Curves.

The remaining sponsors of winning ducks will be announced in the coming days following confirmation of eligibility criteria set by Indiana gaming laws.

In total, $164,443 was raised in this year’s duck race to support child abuse prevention programs in 19 northeast/north central Indiana counties. In addition to sales of duck sponsorships, this year 117 businesses or individuals supported the race by purchasing Duck Dignitary sponsorships of $250 or more.
