Veterans and city officials gathered Friday to rededicate the WWI Memorial moved to McCulloch Park, which has been on the fenced-in grounds of nearby General Electric for 89 years. The memorial was erected on Nov. 11, 1924, in honor of the 748 FortThe American Red Cross has opened a 24-hour emergency shelter at First Assembly of God Church, 1400 West Washington Center Road, near Lima Road, for people who lost electricity or were displaced by Friday’s severe storm.
Anyone coming to the shelter should enter through Door 5. People planning to spend the night need to bring a pillow, sleeping bag, personal hygiene items and their medication. Those who need to plug in medical devices can do so at the shelter.
The Red Cross is also operating shelters in Van Wert, Ohio, at the Van Wert Middle School, 10708 Ohio 118, and in Hicksville, Ohio, at the First Church of Christ, 118 N. Main St.
Numbers to call
To report sparking power lines or fallen trees or poles that are blocking streets, residents should call 911.
To report trees on city property that are down and partly blocking a street, residents should call 311.
To report a power outage, residents should call Indiana Michigan Power at 1-800-311-4634.
City cooling centers
For those looking to escape the heat, Fort Wayne will have three cooling centers open today:
•The Community Center, 233 W. Main St., from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
•Jerry Fox Lifetime Sports Academy in McMillen Park, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
•Jennings Center, 1330 McCulloch St., from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Van Wert update
In a statement, Van Wert County authorities said that main transmission lines north of the Ohio city of Van Wert were damaged in Friday’s storm.
Sunday morning, much of the south end of the city had electricity restored.
Crews are working to fix outages in the village of Convoy, which may take another day or two, authorities said.
Kosciusko outages
High winds that went through Kosciusko County late Sunday afternoon caused scattered outages, just as linemen were close to restoring power lost during Friday’s storm, Kosciusko REMC said in a statement.
The rural electric co-op, which serves over 17,000 customers in Kosciusko County and surrounding counties, estimated that 300 members had no power Sunday evening.
