Indiana 1 crash injures 4

The Indiana State Police said a driver tried to cross Indiana 1 in Steuben County, did not stop for the stop sign and his van was broadsided by a Range Rover.

According to a report from Master Trooper Doug Kelly, a 1996 GMC van driven by Jon D. Phelps, 70, of Hamilton, was going east about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday when the van failed to stop at Indiana 1.

It went into the path of a northbound 2004 Range Rover driven by Dean J. Troyer, 22, of Topeka, the report said.

Four people were injured, and Phelps was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital with internal injuries, the state police said in a written statement. His condition was not immediately available.

It said Troyer and his two passengers, Lyndon J. Yoder, 20 of Goshen, and Matthew L. Slabach, 20, Topeka, all had minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The state police said all four people in the crash were wearing their seatbelts, which reduced the severity of the injuries.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department and Angola Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.
