4 hurt, 1 badly, in Steuben crash

A man suffered internal injuries in a Steuben County crash Tuesday.

Jon D. Phelps, 70, of Hamilton was driving his 1996 GMC van east on Metz Road, approaching Indiana 1, when he ran a stop sign about 10:15 a.m., Indiana State Police said.

Phelps drove into the path of Dean J. Troyer’s eastbound 2004 Range Rover.

Air bags in both vehicles deployed, police said, and Phelps was taken to Cameron Hospital in Angola with internal injuries. He was then flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, police said.

He was in serious condition Tuesday night, hospital officials said.

Troyer, 22, of Topeka, and passengers Lyndon J. Yoder, 20, of Goshen, and Matthew L. Slabach, 20, of Topeka all suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. They were all wearing their seat belts, police said.
