The Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana has issued warnings about a scam that claims a new federal program will pay your utility bills.
The scam has been seen nationwide, and the local bureau has received two calls from residents about it.
Scammers have been advertising the fake program, allegedly created by President Obama, through fliers, social media and text messages. The scammers say they need your Social Security and bank routing numbers to have bills paid by the program.
Names of reputable companies, government organizations, notable individuals and others are being used to help them generate their scams. Beware, said a statement from Michael Coil, president and CEO of the local bureau.
