Komets defenseman off to Toledo: Reports

Starenky

– Komets defenseman David Starenky is headed out of town, though not all that far.

According to news reports, the Toledo Walleye signed the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Starenky, who played in 49 games for the Komets last season, scoring one goal and six assists.

He accumulated 137 penalty minutes, and finished with a plus-9.

In the Komets’ playoff run to the CHL’s President’s Cup, Starenky, 26, played in six games and had two assists and 18 penalty minutes.

A native of Calgary, Alberta, Starenky joined the Komets last season from St. Georges of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (LNAH), where he’d spent the previous two seasons. Prior to that, he’d left the game for two full seasons, working in landscaping, construction and as a telemarketer for a cellphone company after playing 16 games for Wichita of the CHL in 2006-07.

“Nobody treats you as well as they do in this game, with the team environment and stuff like that,” Starenky said of all that last season. “It’s just a lot of fun. And I thought, you know what? Rather than sitting out, I might as well come back to the game while I still can.”
