1 dead in Fort Wayne house fire

FORT WAYNE – The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a fatal house fire before dawn Monday.

Firefighters responded to 744 W. Dewald St. after the call came in at 5:30 a.m., according to a written statement issued later Monday.

It said heavy smoke and fire were coming from the rear of the two-story house when crews arrived.

A victim was found inside on the first floor and was pulled from the structure. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was inside, and no other injuries were reported.

The fire was contained kitchen area, with some extension into the second floor, the statement said.

The victim will be identified by the Allen County Coroner's Office.
