A 2-year-old girl died Sunday afternoon at Salamonie Reservoir in Huntington County after she was found submerged in shallow water, according to Indiana conservation officers.
Conservation officers described the girl's death as a "possible drowning." An autopsy is planned for today to determine her exact cause of death.
She was identified Monday morning by the Huntington County Coroner's Office as Aleea D. Brubaker of North Manchester.
A group of family and friends were playing in shallow water along the western shore of Monument Island, when they lost sight of the girl.
A search started immediately, and within minutes, they found her in the water near the island, conservation officers said.
She was removed from the water, and efforts were made to resuscitate her. A 911 caller reported the events just before 3:30 p.m.
The girl was taken across the lake by boat to the Lost Bridge East public access site. Rescue crews arrived and tried to save the girl, but she died at the scene, conservation officers said.
