Former Leo, Tech star honored

Former Leo and Indiana Tech pitcher Brandon Alger was named the Northwest League Pitcher of the Week while throwing for the Short-Season Eugene (Ore.) Emeralds.

Alger, who has started and pitched out of the bullpen, hasn’t allowed an earned run or walked a batter in his 14 innings he has pitched for the San Diego Padres’ affiliate. Alger is 2-0 in five games with 13 strikeouts in 14 innings and has allowed six hits and one unearned run.

“Throwing strikes, getting ahead early in the count, throwing the fastball and working off that,” Alger told The Register-Guard ofEugeneof his keys to success this year. “My fastball was working tonight and everything else was a show-me pitch to set it up.”

Alger was San Diego’s 26th-round pick last month. His strong start could eventually earn him a promotion to the TinCaps, the low-Class A affiliate of the Padres.
