Live-in boyfriend guilty of molestation

Combs

FORT WAYNE -- An Allen Superior Court jury has found a 27-year-old Fort Wayne man guilty of abusing his girlfriend’s children.

The verdict Thursday afternoon in the case of Michael Combs came after two days of testimony about how 75 bruises came to be on the body of a then 2-year-old boy in late summer 2010.

Combs was also accused of sodomizing the boy, who has suffered lasting damage from the injuries.

Combs was convicted of all charges: two counts of Class A felony child molesting, Class B felony neglect of a dependent and Class D felony battery.

While the children’s mother, Shanna Vorndran, worked at a local fast food restaurant, Combs often cared for her sons – then ages 15 months and 2 years.

The abuse was discovered when the 15-month-old suffered a spiral fracture of his femur and hospital officials notified workers with the Department of Child Services. Vorndran’s two children were removed from the home, as were the four children of Combs’ sister, Anna Hogan.

Both Hogan and Vorndran pleaded guilty to charges of neglect of a dependent for their role in the abuse. They will be sentenced later this year.
