Komets general manager David Franke confirmed there have been talks with Brandon Marino, the CHL's reigning MVP, about playing for Fort Wayne this season.
"We have had discussions with him," Franke said.
However, he made an interesting point.
While many people in hockey circles believed the Quad City Mallards might suspend operations this month, it now seems the team will be back. The Mallards made their first signing of the offseason -- hey, it's only July 13 -- and it was defenseman Darren McMillan. The Mallards could try to get Marino back.
My gut instinct? Marino will be in Fort Wayne. It makes too much sense.
However, again, I must wonder if the Komets are going to go with all CHL players or bring in some people who more closely fit the typical ECHL mold.

- Interesting stuff on Gary Graham's introductory press conference in Pensacola -- click here -- including him touting that Leo Thomas will be the fastest player on the ice and that he'll fight. And look how many people were at that. I have to admit, I really am interested to see how Graham fares. I do root for a guy who has fought an uphill battle to get where he is because he didn't play at a high level.
