Police mark the shooting scene Thursday night.

FORT WAYNE – Fort Wayne police are asking for the public's help after a 3-year-old playing in a yard and an 18-year-old sitting on a porch nearby were shot, leaving the little girl in critical condition.

Police were called about 9:30 p.m. Thursday to the 4800 block of Gaywood Drive, at the intersection of Maple Grove Avenue, a block north of Pettit Avenue.

There, they found Kenaveya Williams, 3, and Quantae A. Jackson, 18, with gunshot wounds. Kenaveya remained in critical condition Friday morning and Jackson was in fair condition, police said.

A group had gathered in a yard near the intersection when at least one man walked up and started shooting, said Officer Chris Felton, city police spokesman. Police were unsure whether the shooting spree was random or targeted, Felton said.

Investigators with the Fort Wayne Police Department continued to interview witnesses through the night, and crime scene technicians have processed the scene for potential evidence, police said in a statement Friday morning.

Police said there is no known relationship between the two shooting victims, and neither lived at the southeast Fort Wayne home where the shootings occurred.

The motive could be gang-related, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call city police at 427-1222. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 436-7867, where a cash reward is possible.
