Blaze starts in storm debris pile

A brush pile of debris from recent storms caught fire early Saturday at Shoaff Park, but firefighters were able to put the blaze out before it spread to the adjacent woods.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called to the park at 6401 St. Joe Road at 3:32 a.m. They found a large fire in the pile of debris, the fire department said.

Crews saw the fire getting close to the woods behind the pile, but were able to push back the flames and bring the fire under control in 36 minutes, the department said.

The parks and street departments brought in heavy loaders to move the pile and break it apart so firefighters could extinguish any hot spots throughout the morning, the department said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The parks department closed the brush drop off following the fire and also closed Conklin Pavilion in the park.
