FORT WAYNE – A man who was shot walking down a street in southeast Fort Wayne on Saturday night has been identified, a city police spokeswoman said.

Antonio L. Hamlet, 34, of Fort Wayne, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to serious condition. The most recent condition update available indicated he was improving, according to a written statement issued Monday morning by Officer Raquel Foster.

Officer Jeremy Webb, a police spokesman, said Saturday that police were dispatched to the corner of Standish Drive and East Fairfax Avenue about 8:30 p.m.

Witnesses told police the man was walking on Standish Drive just north of Paulding Road when a silver car, possibly a Pontiac Grand Prix, pulled up alongside him. A man with a gun got out of the car, fired multiple shots and got back in the car, which then went north on Standish, Webb said. Police did not know whether there was more than one person in the car.

A neighbor told The Journal Gazette she was watching television when she heard three gunshots. She came outside and saw that the man, whom she recognized as a neighbor, had been shot three times: once in the chest, once in the arm and once in the abdomen, said the woman who declined to give her name for fear of retribution.

She said she put pressure on his wounds to stem the bleeding and tried to make him comfortable until paramedics arrived.

“I tried to keep him from going into more shock than he already was,” she said.

Webb said the victim was conscious and speaking when police arrived.
