Girl dies after being found in retention pond

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Police say a 3-year-old girl died after she was found floating in an apartment complex retention pond on the far east side of Indianapolis.

The girl's aunt told police that she woke up from a nap Tuesday evening to find her front door open and the girl gone.

Neighbor Margaret Crowe tells WRTV and WTHR-TV that soon after an officer knocked on her door about the search for the girl, she spotted the girl's pink clothes in the pond and shouted to officers.

Police say an officer pulled her in from about 10 feet off the shore. She was not responsive and was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The girl's name wasn't immediately released. A police spokesman says prosecutors will review the case.
