Knit a wash/dish/anycloth with stripes.

Less than 1 ball of yarn makes striped cloth

I whipped up some wash/dish/anycloths for my niece’s wedding a little while ago.

She loves bright colors, so I thought it would be fun to play with some unusual stripes. Her new last name is Behm, so I’m just calling all five of the cloths I made for her and her new hubby Behm cloths.

I’m sure it will confuse the heck out of some Germans on Ravelry.com (Behm is a German name), but there it is.

For this version, I let the yarn dictate part of the design.

Gauge: 4.6 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch. This makes a cloth that is 9 inches square. If you don’t mind a slightly different size, however, you can work at whatever gauge you like best.

Yarn: Worsted-weight cotton yarn. I used less than one ball of Sugar’n Cream Stripes in Country Stripes.

Notes

sl1wyib: Slip 1 stitch with the working yarn in the back.

sl1wyif: Slip 1 stitch with the working yarn in the front.

Needles: No. 7 needles, or whatever size gives you gauge.

Cast on 42 stitches.

Knit every stitch for 8 rows.

Row 1: k all stitches.

Row 2: k4, p34, k4.

On rows when the color is changing, is about to change, or has changed, work the same as for regular rows, with a small change.

Row 1: k8, to end.

or

Row 2: k4, to the last 4 stitches, k4. Repeat until the cloth is 1 inch short of square. (My cloth was 9 inches wide, so I stopped when it was almost 8 inches long).

Knit every stitch for 8 rows.

Bind off. Darn in all ends and enjoy.

(I took the photo before I darned in the ends. Sorry!)
