’Caps blow 6-run lead, ending winning streak

The TinCaps came into Monday night on a season-best six-game winning streak.

They departed the first inning with a six-run lead.

But they squandered it all, in front of 2,140 fans at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa.

The Quad Cities River Bandits got three runs in the second inning, four runs in the fifth and two runs in the eighth, en route to a 9-6 victory over the TinCaps.

Fort Wayne came into the game having outscored the River Bandits 43-8 in the previous five games between the teams.

But the River Bandits’ David Bergin was 3 for 5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. Luis Mateo also had a home run for the Quad Cities (16-14 second half, 51-48 overall).

Fort Wayne (18-12, 49-51) was paced offensively by Travis Whitmore, who was 2 for 4 with a run.

Tyler Stubblefield, who was selected as Midwest League Player of the Week earlier in the day, was 0 for 3 with a run and a walk. He hit .450 in six games last week, with four doubles, one home run and six RBI.

Reliever Johnny Barbato was named Pitcher of the Week, after he tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in three games.

He wasn’t on the mound Monday, when the TinCaps were outhit 10-7.

USF catcher signs with pro team

Derek Coverstone, a catcher with Saint Francis, has signed to play with the Lincoln (Neb.) Salt Dogs of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

Guard Hinrich returns to Bulls

Kirk Hinrich is back with the Chicago Bulls. The team is bringing back a player it drafted in the first round nine years ago to get a reliable point guard while Derrick Rose recovers from knee surgery. The 6-4 guard averaged 6.6 points for the Hawks last season. He has career averages of 12.5 points and five assists.

Suspended player guilty of rape

Darrell Williams, a suspended Oklahoma State basketball player accused of sexually assaulting two women at a December 2010 house party, was convicted on three of the five counts he faced. Jurors late Monday convicted Williams on two counts of rape by instrumentation and one count of sexual assault. He was acquitted on two other counts of rape by instrumentation.

Gophers coach gets extension

Minnesota coach Tubby Smith agreed to terms on a contract extension with the university through the 2016-17 season. He is 103-68 with the Gophers.

Suspension follows UM back’s arrest

Michigan suspended running back Fitzgerald Toussaint after he was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of drunken driving. Saline Police Department Detective Don Lupi said Toussaint was stopped for a traffic violation in Ann Arbor about 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

Ex-Miami coach headed to TCU

A person familiar with the negotiations said Randy Shannon and TCU agreed on a contract for the former Miami coach to become the Horned Frogs’ linebackers coach. Shannon was fired by Miami at the end of the 2010 regular season.

Vilma’s lawyers, NFL meet

New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith met with NFL lawyers and a federal magistrate in a settlement conference for lawsuits spawned by the players’ suspensions resulting from the league’s bounty investigation.

Receiver’s mom doesn’t want case

Dallas wide receiver Dez Bryant’s mother told authorities that she doesn’t want to pursue a case against her son after an argument allegedly turned violent.

Nashville signed veteran forward Sergei Kostitsyn to a two-year, $6 million contract. … Florida and right wing Kris Versteeg agreed to a four-year contract. … Boston signed coach Claude Julien to a multiyear contract extension. The deal comes a year after Julien led the team to the 2011 Stanley Cup championship – its first in 39 years.

CORRECTION

Triple-winner omitted from list

Because of a reporting error, the name of a triple-winner in the City Swim Meet was omitted Monday on Page 6B. Jordyn Polderman of Blackhawk won three individual events in the girls 13-14 category.
