Ex arrested after chase

Police arrested a Fort Wayne man last week who was hiding in a trash can after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home.

The ex-girlfriend of Stephen O. Wattley II, 20, of the 3300 block of Congress Avenue, called police July 18 when she saw him climb into a second-story window of her home, a probable cause affidavit said.

While an officer waited for other officers to arrive, Wattley was seen headed away from his ex-girlfriend’s home. The officer ordered Wattley to stop, but he ran, court papers said. The chase covered several blocks, police said, before Wattley hid in a garbage can.

Police asked Wattley to come out, but he refused. Three officers then tipped the garbage can on its side and Wattley tumbled out, court papers said.

When police tried to put Wattley in handcuffs, he allegedly curled up into a ball on the ground with his hands underneath him. Officers had to use physical force and spray to get Wattley into handcuffs, court documents said.

He was charged Tuesday with residential entry and two counts of resisting law enforcement. Wattley is being held in lieu of $4,000 bail.
