Officers fatally shoot suspect in Akron

AKRON, Ohio – Akron police officers have fatally shot a suspect they say drew a weapon and refused to drop it.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that it happened just after 7 a.m. Thursday.

Police Capt. Daniel Zampelli told the newspaper that the suspect initially fled from officers who tried to pull him over. He led police on a chase before stopping his car and getting out.

Zampelli said the suspect drew a weapon. When he didn’t drop it as commanded, two officers fired an unknown number of shots, Zampelli said.

The suspect died later at a hospital. His name has not been released.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is routine after they are involved in a shooting.
