The TinCaps got one of their strangest wins of the season, defeating Great Lakes 5-4 in front of 7,801 fans Saturday at Parkview Field.
Mike Gallic scored from first base on a throwing error by catcher Pratt Maynard in the eighth inning to give Fort Wayne the one-run victory.
Here are the highlights.
Key play: Gallic led off the eighth by reaching on an error. With one out, Maynard made a snap throw to first. The ball went wide of Great Lakes first baseman Jesse Bosnik and rolled all the way to the right-field wall. Gallic raced around the bases, giving the TinCaps the 5-4 lead.
Offensive stars: Jace Peterson, Lee Orr, Felix Cabrera and Kyle Gaedele each had two hits for the TinCaps. Gaedele hit his fifth home run of the season. He had two RBI. Cabrera had one RBI. Orr scored twice.
Close calls: Six of the 11 games this season between the TinCaps and Loons have been decided by one run. Another game went to extra innings, with the Loons winning 4-2 in 10.
Relief work: Daniel Copper pitched a scoreless eighth and earned the win. Matt Stites gave up one hit in the ninth, but retired the final batter for his ninth save.
"When I got to second, I saw (manager) Jose (Valentin) waving me home pretty hard. I was like all right, here we go. By the time I got home, I was pretty gassed."
