CHEERS to Greg Newport, president of the Hoosier Palomino Association and local 4-H leader, for volunteering his time to judge a recent horse show at Camp Red Cedar, which offers riding programs for children and adults with and without disabilities.

COURTNEY HARTMAN Anthony Wayne Services

CHEERS to Art at the Wash House on South Calhoun Street. During the power outage I took several loads of laundry there; my 10-year-old daughter went along to help. The place was crowded, hot and noisy. Art kept the entire laundromat running efficiently. He helped people move their laundry, solve problems in running the machines, and he had a friendly word for everyone (not to mention the inspiring quotes he had written on whiteboards all around the establishment.) That day, he did much more. When my daughter spilled some soap, he came rushing over, wiped it up for her and even brought her some popcorn. People like Art make small businesses successful!

BOB and WENDY TYLER and the AMANDA DAVIS TYLER FAMILY Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the Towne House Retirement Center staff and residents. On June 29 I was driving with my granddaughter on Washington Center Road when the big storm blew up. We were in front of the Towne House so we went inside. I asked whether we could wait out the storm there, and they graciously said we could. One resident even showed us where to go when the siren sounded, and another provided a flashlight to us as we headed to the lower level.

JANIE CAUDILL KYLEE CAMPBELL Port Charlotte, Fla.

CHEERS to all the electrical workers who worked tirelessly around the clock and forfeited their Fourth of July holiday with their families to give us back the creature comforts we all take for granted. I cannot imagine the hell these men and women went through. I understand many worked 12- to 16-hour shifts in the heat.

CHRIS SNIDER Fort Wayne

CHEERS to our wonderful neighbors for all the help during the power outage: Kevin for disconnecting his generator and bringing it to our house two days for about four hours each day so we could have water and at least a fan; Max for offering coffee and doughnuts and all the help; Shirley and Rhonda for checking in on us; and Mike for mowing our lawn and cutting down some wild bushes; Casey and Duane for patching our roof and cleaning up the large tree limbs; Terri for saving at least the meat from our freezer; and Terri and Casey for giving up their beds so we would have a place to stay.
