TinCaps win 4th straight

Six innings of dominant pitching from Frank Garces paired with home runs from Duanel Jones and Tyler Stubblefield led the Fort TinCaps to a 3-2 win over the host South Bend Silver Hawks on Tuesday at Coveleski Stadium. Fort Wayne has now won four straight games, and six of its last seven on the road.

Garces (8-5) picked up his seventh win in his last eight starts, pitching six innings and giving one run. The lefthander struck out seven and walked none, marking just the second time this season he did not walk a batter. He gave up a run in the fifth inning on a Tom Belza sacrifice fly.

Fort Wayne (23-14, 54-53) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning against Silver Hawks starter Tyler Green (3-7). Duanel Jones hit his fourth homer of season into the seats in left. In the third, Tyler Stubblefield hit his fifth home run, a two-run blast, that gave the TinCaps a 3-0 lead.

South Bend (18-19, 53-54) threatened several times after Garces’ departure, but notched just one more run. In the eighth against James Jones, a Kerry Jenkins fielder’s choice scored Tom Belza, cutting the TinCaps lead to 3-2. Daniel Cropper came on for the ninth, earning his eighth save in 10 tries.

The TinCaps are one game above .500 for the first time since April 17, 2011.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. The scheduled starters are Chris Fetter for the TinCaps and Keith Hessler for the Silver Hawks.
