TinCaps win 5th in a row

The surging TinCaps won their fifth consecutive game Wednesday at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend with a 5-4 victory over the Silver Hawks.

Fort Wayne (24-14, 55-53 overall) overcame a 4-1 deficit by scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and two in the eighth.

The TinCaps, in search of a three-game sweep over South Bend (18-20, 53-55) in today’s 7:05 p.m. game, scored their first run when Mike Gallic opened the inning with a double, stole second and scored on Lee Orr’s single.

The same combination struck again in the sixth when Gallic singled and scored on Orr’s double to center. Then in the seventh, B.J. Guinn singled and scored on Travis Jankowski’s double.

Gallic finished with three hits, and Orr provided two RBI.

The TinCaps took the lead in the eighth. Yeison Asencio hit a one-out double and the bases became loaded on back-to-back walks to Orr and Duanel Jones. Austin Hedges’ single drove in Asencio with the tying run, and Kyle Gaedele brought in Orr with the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center.

Chris Fetter was the starting TinCaps pitcher and was replaced in the second inning by James Needy, who worked through the fifth inning. Luis De La Cruz and Matt Stites threw four innings of no-hit relief, with De La Cruz pitching three innings.

The TinCaps placed pitcher Dennis O’Grady (4-0, 4.05 ERA) on the disabled list. Replacing him on the roster was pitcher Daniel Sarria, who transferred from the Arizona League Padres. Sarria began the season with the TinCaps. In six appearances, he had no decisions, with a 7.94 ERA.
