The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has declared today an air quality action day for the Indiana counties of Allen, Elkhart, Huntington, LaPorte and St. Joseph.
Ozone levels are expected to be in the orange range, defined as unhealthy for sensitive groups. Active children and adults and people with respiratory disease such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exertion during air quality action days.
People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation. These activities include refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling, using gasoline-powered lawn equipment and using charcoal lighter fluid.
People should consider carpooling or biking to work, delaying or combining errands and using water-based paints.
