Suspect held in fatal bike hit-and-run

Scott

A Noble County man was arrested at work Thursday, preliminarily charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident after sheriff’s deputies found a body about a mile east of Topeka.

Zane Edward Scott, 28, is accused of killing a bicyclist identified as Wilmer L. Herschberger before dawn Thursday in the 4600 block of West County Road 700 South, according to a statement from the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department.

Herschberger, 29, of Topeka, died before officers arrived, and the sheriff’s department said that after his van struck the bicycle at 5:13 a.m., the Kendallville-area man left without rendering aid or calling officials.

Police did a sweep of local factories and found a blue 2002 Chevy van matching the description supplied by a witness, the statement said. It said Scott is the registered owner and was arrested about 9 a.m.
