Don't be silly. Of course it was.

This one's just too good to pass up, even on a day when Serena Williams nearly bageled Maria Sharapova -- she won 6-0, 6-1 -- to win the gold medal in women's tennis, and LeBron James had to save the U.S. from the clutches of Lithuania on the basketball floor.

No way that, or anything else, can trump Phelps, who was judged by many (including the guy driving this sentence) to be washed up after his listless fourth in the 400 IM. The torch had been passed, the narrative went, to Ryan Lochte, who won the 400 IM.

Well, guess what?

Lochte promptly went south, disappearing from the radar with alarming suddenness. And when it was all over, Phelps was the man again: four golds and two silvers in these Games, more than any swimmer.

If this is washed up, they should sell stock in it.
