Fire, police double up to rescue 5 from blaze

Firefighters and police teamed up to rescue a family of five who had climbed out to a porch roof after their home caught fire early Monday morning.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called to a structure fire at 1819 Reidmiller Ave. at 1:45 a.m. and immediately rescued the five occupants from the home’s porch roof with the help of Fort Wayne police officers, the fire department said.

Firefighters got to the two-story home three minutes after receiving the 911 call and found heavy fire on the first floor and on the porch, the statement said. Two adults and three children were rescued from the front porch roof, the report said.

No one else was found in the home, and firefighters said they had the blaze under control in 18 minutes. No one was injured.

The home had heavy fire, smoke and water damage, the report said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
